Residents gathered at the Goulburn Soldiers Club on Wednesday night to air their concerns about the proposed Chicago Freight rail hub, which would see timber and other goods from Goulburn sent into Botany Bay for export.

It was the second Q session about the proposal.

While initial discussion centred on traffic on Sloane St, it was the fumigation process that garnered the most attention.

Under the proposal, logs would be stacked into a shipping container, sealed and the methyl bromide, in liquid form, introduced into the space.

Heat is used to convert it into a gas, which is left for 24 hours.

When the container is opened, the methyl bromide is five parts per million, and dissipates into the atmosphere, according to proponents.

It’s this dissipation that’s causing concern for residents, who are worried that the chemical will blow into their homes.

One south Goulburn resident cited the example of logs at Burnie in Tasmania, which are fumigated out to sea, as proof there were concerns about the chemical’s use.

He accused Chicago Freight of doing the project “on the cheap”.

In his introduction, Chicago Freight Rail Services Goulburn workshop manager Mick Cooper said the proposal was about securing and attracting jobs to Goulburn.

“The rail industry at the moment is very hard work. There’s lots and lots of rolling stock sitting doing nothing around the country, and we need to get it moving,” he said.

“One option is to get it moving down here, running from here cheap jerseys into Port Botany for export.”

While the project, if approved, would initially see logs run out of the hub, Mr Cooper said he had been approached about other products using the line, including imported American cars, stone fruits and tomatoes.

National business development manager for Qube Logistics Dan Coulton said the proposal “had to start somewhere”.

“You have to get a base load of freight, which in this case are logs. On the top of the activity, you’ve got all those other products mentioned earlier.”

Timber trucks rattling along Sloane St was another issue raised, with timber predominantly to be brought into the Chicago Freight yard from along the Braidwood Rd.

“The Canberra timber is only a small percentage of the total wood brought into this yard,” consultant Ian MacArthur said.

“The majority of the wood is going to be coming from Braidwood. The wood from Canberra, I’d say, 80 per cent would be coming via the Kings Highway through Bungendore, Tarago and via the Braidwood Rd, so it won’t be coming down Sloane St.
